Touring Casco Viejo Panama City

While we waited for our transit through the canal we took some time to tour Casco Viejo, the historic district of Panama City. The buildings in this district were built in 1673 after the original Panama City was burned during an attack by pirates. In 1997 the district was declared a World Heritage Site. It's a fascinating peek into history with numerous buildings having been beautifully restored while others are in progress and still more lie in ruins. We strolled along the narrow cobblestone roads visiting the many coffee shops, cafes, bars, churches and museums.

Many of the buildings are currently under construction as the historic sites are slowly restored.
